We just had a problem that could cause this issue as well (Possibly similar to what is going with your site), but a conflict with a JavaScript markup from a plugin. It is a pain, but do some research on the person who uploaded the theme and be sure that you check their reviews. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766.
